A campus security officer noticed Christian Gebhardt, 21, of West Islip, and Antonio Rey, 19, of Syracuse, riding in the red 2009 Club Car, valued at $14,000, around 12:30 a.m., police said.

At first the pair, who are not Fairfield University students, said they were riding around campus driving students back to their rooms, but it was later determined they had taken the cart to ride back to a friend’s dorm, police said.

Gebhardt and Rey were each charged with second-degree larceny. They were released on a promise to appear in court on Nov.17.

The university does not use the golf carts at night, police said. The keys were not in the ignition, but a switch was on allowing someone to drive the cart, police said.
